The Classic Tarot was created around 1835 in Milan, Italy. It is done in the Soprafino style (meaning "super-fine").
Around 1830, Ferdinand Gumppenberg – a German printer who had moved to Milan in 1809 – asked etcher Carlo Della Rocca to make him a deck of tarot cards. Della Rocca created the designs, etching them first on steel and then coloring each printed card by hand.
Unique Aspects of this deck
Magician
A shoemaker is shown at his workspace, surrounded by tools of his trade. A jug rests nearby as he raises a large glass of wine.
Lovers
A young man stands between a romantic partner and a king who places a hand on his shoulder. His mixed clothing suggests inner conflict, as he struggles to choose between love and responsibility.
Justice
The figure leans slightly, and both the sword and scales are angled. An eye is placed at the center of her neckline.
Hermit
Instead of a lantern, he carries a small exposed flame in a simple holder.
Strength
The woman actively restrains the lion, sitting on it with intensity. One foot presses down as the animal resists her effort to control it.
Death
A skeleton gathers up objects that represent status and ego, such as fine items and symbols of rank. The card avoids the word “Death” and is labeled “Thirteen.”
Devil
The figure includes familiar demonic traits like a trident, animal-like ears, snake-like hair, clawed limbs, and fiery imagery.
Moon
The scene includes towers and dogs but shifts to a shoreline setting. One tower becomes a lighthouse, while the dogs remain enclosed. A prepared lobster sits on a dish nearby.
Sun
A cheerful pair dances together in an enclosed garden beneath a bright sun, with clouds fading away.
